According to a study published by the Institute of Medicine,  pain management is a serious public health issue that is costing around $560 to $635 billion annually. This equals to around $2,000 per person. What this study also reveals is that more and more Americans are depending on pain management medications. Last year alone, over 500,000 visits were made to the Emergency Room because it was directly linked to over medicating on pain medication.
